Twin Spell

Don't despair, it is still in Print!
This is my favourite childhood book, and while searching for a new copy of it several years back (my copy no longer has it's cover) I discovered that it had been reprinted with another name. The new editions are under the title "Double Spell"! I know that this is the case in Canada, and that this title is listed on Amazon.ca, so I'm sure it's on .com as well. Hope I've helped someone else fine the magical novle.

Fond memories....
My cousin and I are in our early 30s and have been searching EVERYWHERE for this book. We remember reading it as young teenagers and how much we LOVED IT! I hope to get a copy thru Amazon; if so, I know I'll STILL enjoy it! EXCELLENT mystery!

I wish this book was still in print!
I had hoped to make this book this month's selection for my book club. I am really upset that it is out of print! This an excellent book. I am 11 years old and found the book really exciting.

The Very Rich Hours: Travels in Orkney, Belize, the Everglades, and Greece (Concord Library)
Published in Paperback by Beacon Press (September, 1993)
Author: Emily Hiestand
Average review score:

Praise by a reader familiar with Hiestand's work
The Very Rich Hours does not merely tell; it transports. And if this is not enough, it also entertains. Hiestand has an eye for the humor innate in most situations involving human beings, a sense communicated delicately and wryly rather than broadly. The tableau which features Hiestand and her travelling companion learning how to navigate a houseboat in the Everglades is as funny as choice parts of Douglas Adams' Last Chance to See. Like Adams, Hiestand does not allow her own discomfiture to eclipse the enjoyment her audience might obtain from her experience. Hiestand also knows that the real adventure in travelling lies in discoveries like the Stromness Natural History Museum, with its "hundred frozen-in-flight, frozen-on-a-branch, or frozen-in-defense-of-their-young stuffed birds," or the sudden appearance of an herbalist shop, populated by "crones," on a busy Athens street. She finds many marvelous surprises, and she invests the time and att! ention required to appreciate and understand them. The Very Rich Hours deserves the same attention.

Adventures of the mind and heart
What fun, what vision, what a great shipwreck story. I've read plenty of sea adventures, but never one that merged grit, adrenaline, and fear with a lyrical excursion worthy of Calvino or Marquez. And that's one part of one essay. Like a travelogue shot by a feature filmmaker, this beautifully wrought book offers sharp, compelling storytelling images set in luminous portraits of the natural world.

Yet more praise!
"If one must travel, one should do it with the eyes of a child, the mind of an ecologist, the heart of a pagan, and the words of a poet. Astonishingly, Emily Hiestand has all of that." --Kirkpatrick Sale, author,The Conquest of Paradise

"The prose quivers with grace and wit as it charges the large questions with luminous details." --Bonnie Costello, author, Marianne Moore:Imaginary Possessions

"In these fresh accounts of far-flung locations, Hiestand keeps returning us to the profound questions not of exploration, but of home. That is the book's great discovery: we're in this together, wherever we are." --Patricia Hampl, author,A Romantic Education

"The most exciting travel writing I have read in years.... These pieces are, in the best sense, world-views... The poetic eye is their greatest strength; or rather, a poetic sensibility and intuitive perceptiveness combined with a remarkably cultivated and civilized intellect... The style seems to be an expression of good manners, good intellectual manners. She confronts head on some of the basic issues of writing and thinking about nature." --Robert Finch, ed.,The Norton Book of Nature Writing

"Her range of references is wide and unexpected, and she is a wonderful observer... [W]hat holds the book together is a wry and elegant dexterity of intelligence, a sense of humor that engages both the solemn revelations and the undignified exasperations of travel with precision and elan." --Franklin Burroughs, author, Billy Watson's Croker Sack

I liked that different animals, besides the puppy, got rescued. It was exciting and I couldn't put it down until I finished it.

Unforgettable

Highly recommended!

*** This book seems to be best for ages 7 - 12. Teaches, while entertaining, how to treat possible animal emergencies that may occur in a child's life. Highly recommended! ***

Drawing Angels Near
Published in Hardcover by Pocket Star (December, 1995)
Authors: Mimi Doe Walch, Garland Waller, Mimi Doe, and Emily Bestler
Average review score:

Delightful!
Having been a child/family therapist for many years, Mimi Doe has captured the innovative and charming drawings of children and their inner guardians beautifully. It is a wonderful tool for parents and children to use to talk about angels and spirituality using the language of pictures and the brilliance of the free creative spirits of other children. It is a fun and stimulating gift for kids.

Adorable pictures and wise stories -- enchanting
I love this dear book. I received it as a birtyhday gift because I love angels but my son is the one who keeps reading it and he is ten years old. The pictures are amazing and the stories give me goose bumps. This is such a nice book.

Adorable book -- for all ages.
My whole family loves this little book. We received it as a Christmas gift last year and it sits on our coffee table to this day -- a whole year later. The wisdom from the children is truly heart warming. My kids don't feel so alone as they feel they have angels and love seeing what other children's angels look like. Don't miss this book for angel lovers and those of us who love kids. Angels and children are an enchanting blend.

Emily the Strange 2003 Calendar
Published in Paperback by Chronicle Books (Cal) (August, 1902)
Author: Chronicle Books
Average review score:

Emily the Strange ALL YEAR LONG!
I love Emily the Strange and have for years. Anything with her on it is a pleasure - the artwork is terrific and the sense of humor behind it is deliciously dark. The calendar is filled with Emily-isms like "Loves Me Not Day" for Valentine's Day and "NeeChees birthday" to commemorate one of the birthdays of her many cats. And every 13th day of each month is highlighted whether it falls on a Friday or not. It's a great calendar - and I enjoy having it hanging in my kitchen to commemorate this year!

Different, but good...
Bought this as an xmas present for my daughter. She received 3 calendars, but this is her favorite. In my opinion, this is a nice calendar and does not depict anything too dementing. It looks nice upon her wall next to her Ozzy calendar, which is very scary compared to little Emily ! ! !

Great !
for the Goths of all ages, but not really for children.

Emily's Secret

Authors: Linda Barr and Linda Barr

Best book on bulimia for teens!
This is a great book to explain bulimia to teens. This and other Linda Barr books should go back into print!

Book was great!!
I read this book a long time ago when I was in 8th grade about four years ago. And even though it was a teacher's book and I still couldn't get over the fact how great it was. I really liked it! I can't find it at any bookstores. I don't order from online so it's kinda hard for me. But I only remember books that I really like and would give 5 stars to and this book was great! ...I would recommand this book to anyone and especially those with eating disorders. It'll make you think twice about it.

Great book!!! You'll read it over and over...
Emily's Secret is one of the best books I've ever read! You would want to read Emily's Secret if you are interested in learning more about how people associate with eating disorders and how to make a right choice if you think yourself to be overweight. I, personally, like to read about other people's problems and how they fix them. I read Emily's Secret about 10 times and I am normally not a person who likes to read. I like Emily's Secret and I recommend ages 12 and up should read it.

Black Is Brown Is Tan
Published in Hardcover by Harpercollins Juvenile Books (February, 1987)
Authors: Arnold Adoff and Emily Arnold McCully
Average review score:

A definate favorite in our home...
This book (Black is Brown is Tan) has been a favorite of my daughter since she was one year. There are very few children's books that stress the positive of being a member of a bi-racial family. Black is Brown Is Tan shows the harmony and love between parents, children, and other family members. We love the fact that the extended family (the tan-skinned Uncle, Grandma White and Granny Black) are prominent figures in this book. The book highlights the differences and similarities between the races. It is a great read for all families no matter what their ethnic background. It has become the main staple in my baby shower gift baskets.

30 Years Later
I first read this book when the librarian at my elementary school in Worthington, Ohio had the insight to order it! I was the first student to check it out. I was in Fifth Grade at the time. I have to say that at the time, I had a friend that was black (like coffee in the pot) and I am white (with pinks and brown freckles). She lived with an all white family as a foster child. My family had real issues that the two of us were friends. Reading this book helped make things easier for me. 16 years ago, I bought this book for my bi-racial daughter, Samantha. She loved it. Now, all three of my children and many of our neighbors' children have borrowed it, read it, and live it. I can't think of any better way to breach the subject of race and to explain our differences and most importantly, our similarities. Black is Brown is Tan... for 30 years this book has helped me and my family!

A Joyous Celebration of Family.....
"black is brown is tan/is girl is boy/is nose is face/is all the colors/of the race // is dark is light/singing songs/in singing night/kiss big woman hug big man/black is brown is tan // this is the way it is for us this is the way we are" Originally published in 1973, Arnold Adoff's joyous, lyrical, story-poem is as fresh and relevant today, as is was almost thirty years ago. Meet this wonderful extended family, from Momma, a "brown sugar gown/a tasty tan and coffee pumpkin pie/with dark brown eyes and almond ears", and Dad, not white like milk or snow, but "with pinks and tiny tans...brown eyes big yellow ears", and their kids, the color of both races, to golden haired aunts, tan colored uncles, granny white and grandma black "kissing both your cheeks and hugging back..." Mr Adoff's simple, rhythmic text is filled with love and pride as it celebrates his interracial family, and is complemented by award winning illustrator, Emily McCully's warm and cheerful artwork. Together word and art paints an engaging portrait of a strong, happy, loving family. Perfect for youngsters from 3 to 93, Black Is Brown Is Tan is a timeless classic, best read aloud and shared, that honors all families and the things that make them special.

Decent Book...got the job done.
The book was helpful, the chapter formats are short and to the point giving you only what you need to pass the, which is good. Just don't rely only on this book...here is a secret, there is a program called cf_buster that is a great test prep that when used in conjuction with this book simulate a certified test environment. I passed my test today.

Well Written
most chapter's are only 10 pages or less long so you can sit down for 5 minutes read a chapter then come back and read another chapter later as it helps to read a whole chapter at once

where as some books are like 40 pages per chapter and ya need to sit down with a fair bit of time just to read the chapter

A review guide that provides helpful pointers

China to me : a partial autobiography

Fascinating Look at a woman ahead of her time
I found this book on a coffee table at a lodge in a remote part of WA state. I'm ashamed to say, I enjoyed it so much I snitched it and took it home with me. This is a fascinating book about a brave woman. She is so familiar in her writing, I felt like I knew her personally and had to find out what happened to her family! Good Read!

Ground-breaking role model for women - human and funny
As the adopted granddaughter of Emily Hahn and a co-founder of Bastard Nation, I was especially moved by reading my grandmother's brave, amusing and thought-provoking account of keeping her out-of-wedlock child (my mother, Carola).

I am writing to notify all readers that Ms. Hahn passed away in February 1997. She is survived by her daughters, Carola Vecchio and Amanda Boxer, and her husband, Charles Ralph Boxer

A Dog in Heat Is a Hot Dog: And Other Rules to Live by
Published in Hardcover by Pocket Star (February, 1996)
Authors: E. Jean Carroll and Emily Bestler
Average review score:

A lot of fun and good sense
You will love this book if you've seen a few of E. Jean's advice columns, and would like a whole lot more! This is lots more of E. Jean's advice, to your heart's content, and amusing commentary as well. I was a little disappointed--but for a positive reason; I guess I'd already read many of these in Elle magazine, being a fan of E. Jean's! So if you regularly read Elle, this might be a little bit redundant. But I'm still not sorry I bought this.

eeeeeeeee! E. Jean rules!
I love E. Jean and her column is the first )and sometimes only) thing I read in Elle magazine. She is just so smart, and classy, and funny. When a woman feels down about her lovelife, E. Jean tells her to go volunteer at a shelter where the kids are looking for someone to love. E. Jean will tell one woman to get out of the exotic dancing business and another to go into it, based on the question, stating college costs so much she wouldn't be surprised if Hillary Clinton herself did it to put Chelsea through Harvard (this book came out in 1997.)

E. Jean just loves life and sees its possibilities, and she wants her readers to as well. Read this book and you're sure to agree.

Excerpts from published newspaper and magazine reviews

"It's a gas, and sometimes a revelation... E. Jean's punchy wisdom shines."
--- Indianapolis Star

"There's seldom a dull moment with outrageous E. Jean."
--- New York 'Newsday'

"For all of us who are 'tormented, driven witless and whipsawed by confusion,' there is E. Jean Carroll."
--- Chicago Tribune

"A 'Dear Abby' for the 'fin de siecle' generation."
--- Columbia Dispatch (SC)

"Witty and wise... You think E. Jean is either intoxicating or just intoxicated."
--- Entertainment Weekly

"Outrageously brilliant E. Jean Carroll is the only advice columnist in America with the wisdom, the guts, and the pure rambunctious flair to give it to you straight. And if you haven't caught her act, honey, you don't know what you're missing."
--- Quote from 'A Dog in Heat is a Hot Dog' book jacket
